Cookie Notice
This notice explains what is stored on your device when you use VATcodex, in accordance with Article 22(2) of Spanish Law 34/2002 (LSSI-CE) and Article 5(3) of Directive 2002/58/EC.
1. No cookies for analytics or advertising
This site sets no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies and no tracking cookies, first-party or third-party. There is no analytics provider, no advertising network and no social plug-in anywhere in it. That is why you are not asked to accept anything: there is nothing to consent to.
2. What is stored in your browser
A few things are kept in your browser’s local storage, which is not a cookie: it is never transmitted to a server, and it can be cleared at any time from your browser settings.
| What | Why | Consent needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Your display preferences: the theme (automatic, light or dark), the text size, the width of the text column and the paper or white background of the reading pane, the width of the list and whether the header is folded away | So the site opens the way you left it. Reading for hours is the point of it | No. They are preferences you set yourself, exempt under Article 5(3) |
| Your own work: the folders you create, your notes on a case and the passages you highlight; and the options you last used on the print page | So that your work is there when you come back. It stays in this browser: it is not sent to any server, nobody else can see it, and no account is needed | No. It is content you create yourself, strictly necessary for the function you asked for |
| Your sign-in session, if you have an account: a token proving you are signed in, and its refresh token | So that you stay signed in between pages and visits | No. It is strictly necessary to provide the service you explicitly asked for by signing in |
If you never create an account, the last row never applies to you. Signing out removes it.
3. Technical caching of the case-law data
The search runs inside your browser, so the case-law index is downloaded to your device and cached there by the ordinary browser cache, exactly as images and stylesheets are. This is not tracking and identifies nobody: it is what makes the search instantaneous and what keeps your queries from being sent anywhere. Clearing your browser cache removes it; the site then downloads it again on the next visit.
The semantic search model is downloaded once and cached the same way, the first time you use it.
4. Third-party connections
Your browser contacts the hosting provider for the site itself, and the providers of the software library and the search model the first time semantic search is used. Those parties see your IP address because a browser cannot request a file without revealing it. None of them sets a cookie on this site. The typefaces are served from this site itself, so no font provider is contacted at all. If you sign in or open the discussion, your browser also contacts the database provider. The Privacy Policy names all of them and says what each receives.
5. Controlling what is stored
Every browser lets you inspect and delete local storage and the cache for a single site, usually under privacy or site settings. Deleting the cache costs you nothing: the site keeps working and simply downloads what it needs again. Deleting the local storage also deletes your folders, notes and highlights, because they exist only in this browser and there is no copy anywhere else; it resets your display preferences too and, if you are signed in, ends your session.
